Jerry uses soft-vine charcoal to sketch in some of the elements then begins the underpainting or blocking in sky and where the waterfall will be. Then Jerry begins mottling in where the trees and rock formations will be creating "shelves." Jerry creates various values to make the area look rocky. Jerry shows how to create suggestion of various tree shapes along top. The depth of the painting begins to appear as Jerry illustrates the various values. Jerry begins showing light which creates further development of rock formations.
