Burt Wolf: Travels & Traditions

The Beach Vacation, Part 1

Season 17, Episode 3 of 8

Until the middle of the 1700s, beaches were considered dangerous. It was where you encountered pirates and thieves and invaders. But shortly after the industrial revolution got started, doctors began recommending beach vacations to improve your health. Burt takes a look at the history of beach vacations and visits the Palm Beach area on the east coast of Florida, which was one of the earliest destinations for a beach vacation in America. He visits a marine center that is saving the sea turtle, an Equestrian competition, the Bear Trap at the PGA National Resort, and sees an extraordinary example of medical tourism.
