During World War II, Japanese-Americans formed the 442nd Infantry Regiment to show their loyalty to the United States. Despite discrimination at home, they served with distinction on the Western Front and would come to be regarded as heroes. In October 1944, the regiment responded to an emergency order to rescue soldiers who were surrounded by German troops in France. Two hundred and eleven men of the "Lost Battalion" were saved but at a cost of hundreds of casualties. RESCUING THE LOST BATTALION: THE STORY BEHIND THE "HEROES" explores the bravery of the 442nd Infantry Regiment through interviews with surviving veterans, archival material, re-enactment, and computer animation and graphics detailing the battalion's movements as they worked to rescue a unit trapped in the forest by German troops.
