With the initial plans for the zoo drawn up, George turns his mind to growing the stock at Oakfield, which brings him face-to-face with two Himalayan black bears hiding out in a cave in Matlock. The male is extremely protective of the malnourished female and George - along with Lizzie's brother, Billy - is in a quandary about what to do. Back at Oakfield, Lizzie and the family continue the onerous work of putting the zoo together. However, Mew has shut herself away in protest and Lucy is less than enthusiastic about Lizzie taking the reins. With George away, Lizzie is forced to interpret his muddled plans in order to fill in official forms that need to be submitted to the council imminently. Meanwhile, Reverend Webb is determined to find out exactly what's going on at Oakfield and he's horrified to learn from Camilla, who's intercepted a private telegram, that the family are building an attraction for visitors to flock to. While George and Billy have a job on their hands rescuing the bears, particularly as the female bear is sick and the male won't leave her side, Councillor Tipping of Chester Council receives a call from Webb. Now that they know what the Mottersheads are planning, the zoo must be stopped.
