When Islamic State militants launched a violent offensive in 2014, taking vast sections of northern Iraq, the country's leading Shia cleric called on all able-bodied men to defend against the Sunni extremist group. Tens of thousands from Iraq's Shia south heeded the call, joining the ranks of the country's various security forces. Yet with thousands of Iraqis injured or killed during the nearly four-year war, many now say they feel neglected and can't secure the medical care they need.
