Hundreds of thousands have fled to Peru to escape the economic and political crisis at home. Venezuela's displacement crisis is the second largest in the world, with nearly 3.5 million people fleeing the country's economic and political turmoil in recent years. An estimated 500,00 Venezuelans alone in 2018 migrated to Peru, where they have found a chance at a new life. Many entered the country on a visa allowing them to stay and find work for up to one year. But with the unending flow of Venezuelans and worries about overburdened state services, Peru stopped accepting work permits at the end of last year. While new arrivals are allowed entry on tourist visas, they are not extended the opportunity to work. NewsHour Weekend Special Correspondent Kira Kay has the story.
