PBS News Weekend

Season 12, Episode 9 of 99

New psychological guidelines look at how males are socialized to be masculine, and the negative impact that can have. The American Psychological Association in 2018 published its first-ever guidelines for psychological practice related specifically to boys and men. The guidelines look at how the socialization of men and unhealthy concepts of masculinity may be contributing to higher rates of suicide, depression, health disorders and violence in male populations. And while the report set off a controversy in the U.S., there are already ongoing efforts to disrupt this embedded culture of masculinity in some unexpected places, from the football field to the middle of a mosh pit. NewsHour Weekend's Christopher Booker reports.
