Ghost Ship, The Mary Celeste

Season 1, Episode 7 of 10

On December 5, 1872, an American merchant ship sailing from New York to Italy was found drifting erratically in the mid-Atlantic. On board the Mary Celeste there was no sign of her eight American and German crew-members. For 134 years what happened on board this ghost ship has baffled historians and scientists. And, the men on the ship that discovered the derelict and abandoned Mary Celeste, spent the rest of their lives regretting their find. Now the true and extraordinary story is revealed. The little-known natural phenomenon of seaquakes provides a convincing new explanation for the mysterious abandonment. This compelling one-hour documentary reveals that seaquakes have posed a threat to mariners and their ships since the advent of sailing - and continue to do so to this day. Plus, the nature of her cargo is shown to have also contributed to the crew's demise. New scientific research, first rate CGI, dramatic reconstructions, and the personal testimony of experts in the field bring to life one of the sea's most enduring mysteries.
