Second Wind: The Tale of a Sailor

Episode 1 of 1

A profile of award-winning nautical photographer Onne van der Wal, SECOND WIND: THE TALE OF A SAILOR chronicles Onne's career and his solo, hands-on restoration of a 1972 Pearson 36 sailboat. Through vintage photos and vivid storytelling, Onne shares the story of his journey from a sailing apprentice to a professional crew member racing large sailboats - including the famous Dutch FLYER in the 1981/82 Whitbread Round the World Race. While at sea, Onne began documenting his adventures with a camera. Through talent and some well-timed opportunities, Onne launched a successful three-decade career as a photographer, which has taken him around the world - from the Arctic to the tropics - to capture some of sailing's most thrilling moments. To renovate the 1972 sailboat Onne calls "Snoek," he must call on the skills and knowledge he's acquired throughout his career, summoning all the ingenuity, instinct and tenacity he's gleaned from a lifetime at sea. SECOND WIND: THE TALE OF A SAILOR tells the story of the challenging, exhausting and yet exhilarating process of refitting "Snoek" from stem to stern. Working through the freezing winter in Newport, R.I., Onne finishes the renovation in time to enjoy the summer sailing season with his family.
