Arizona Illustrated

Season 9, Episode 7 of 39

When thinking of premiere wine grape-growing regions around the world, Arizona rarely comes to mind. That’s because grape farming in Arizona sits right on the edge of what’s possible with viticulture. There are heat waves, vine-cracking winter frosts, and most extreme of all: monsoons during the harvest season that can transform the chemistry of wine grapes overnight. But Arizona winemakers are resilient, and the state’s wine industry is booming. There’s a unique terroir you can taste, with a palate unlike any other. Every year Weaver Younghands creates lunar trackers, beautiful planning tools, similar to calendars, that are rooted in desert ecology and organized by moon cycles. Their aim is to inspire people with illustrations of Sonoran flora and fauna, and to have people track how the moon cycles are affecting their lives. We follow Weaver through several ecosystems as they explain the creation and use of the lunar trackers. Over the years, the therapeutic use of psychedelics has become increasingly more popular and available. Ketamine is one such psychedelic, listed as a Schedule III drug and legalized for “ off-label” use by licensed medical professionals. Combined with psychotherapy, some studies show its success in treating a wide range of anxiety disorders. Architect Damon Leverett shares what makes the University of Arizona s Health Sciences Innovation Building such an architectural wonder.
