Arizona Illustrated

Season 9, Episode 31 of 39

The Sonoran Desert Toad is endemic to the Sonoran Desert. It is also the only animal that naturally produces 5-meO-DMT in large quantities. Once plentiful in the region, the herpetological community is worried that it could now be overly exploited for the psychedelic substance it produces. We think so little of socks. Barbara Schroeder knits socks with a 130-year-old antique sock knitting machine. Between 1813 to the 1990s. The Hand Cranked Knitter and Sock Machine, invented in the United States and manufactured in North America, were essential. Barbara tells the importance of these machines during the WW1 when US had a national mobilization. Knitting was a heroic act at the time and all women were called to "knit their bit" to help the boys fighting at the trenches. Barbara cannot emphasize enough the importance of wearing wool socks, even in summer! From a young age Patrick Robles has always had a passion for public service. As student body president of the University of Arizona, Robles has fought for students’ voices to be heard. From working to extend fare free public transit, to improving mental health and food benefits, Robles and the students have shaped a university that better serves the students and the community. Fanya Lin is an electrifying pianist and Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music. She recently took time to play an exclusive set for our cameras at Crowder Hall on the University of Arizona campus, which will also be the venue for her upcoming concert with the Tucson Repertory Orchestra on June 3rd, 2023.
