Santa Cruz River Cleanup The Sonoran Institute hosted an event to clean up 2000 pounds of trash from the Santa Cruz River. Hundreds of volunteers turned up and greatly exceeded that goal. After removing the refuse, they spread wildflower seeds. A strong sense of community and love for the river was in abundance. The Schorr’s Dining Table Mental illness has long been stigmatized and difficult to speak about, but it’s come a long way in being understood. In large part because of parents and others directly affected by serious mental illness who pushed for advocacy and new legislation in a system not prepared to provide care to their loved ones. In this story we meet three such parents whose legacy is a more understanding, just and caring mental health system and world. Ayudantes en la Frontera (Border Helpers) For different reasons, Mark Adams and Miriam Maldonado Escobar both felt obligated to migrate to the border in the late 90s, where they met. They left their homes and dreams behind to find a new community and a new purpose. They’ve raised their family and dedicated their lives to working with the Presbyterian church to help thousands of vulnerable migrants every year. Edward Goodman on Saxaphone Edward “Eddie” Goodman is the Associate Professor of Saxophone at the University of Arizona’s Fred Fox School of Music. In this riveting performance, he discusses how his relationship with the saxophone has contributed to his own personal development, as well as life lessons that can be gleaned from learning the instrument.
