Arizona Illustrated

Season 11, Episode 7 of 47

Detained "DETAINED: Voices from the Migrant Incarceration System," is an oral history project archiving the stories of asylum seekers formerly incarcerated in Arizona. The organizers call the archive a counter-memorial and intend for it to be a record of the emergent landscape of for-profit immigrant detention. Their hope is that the project will foster public engagement with the marginalized voices at the center of the immigrant detention industry. The Musical Instrument Museum The Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix is a one-of-a-kind experience. It houses over 7500 instruments from around the world, a restaurant and a live concert venue. It offers a unique look into global cultures through the power of music. On the Origin of Covid The origin of the COVID-19 pandemic has become a heated and politicized public debate. Did the virus come from a Chinese lab leak, or did it jump from animals to humans in a Wuhan wet market? Enter Michael Worobey, Department Head of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona and one of the world’s leading scientists studying the genomic origins of pandemics. His research has now demonstrated definitive evidence in favor of a market origin for the virus, but public opinion on the topic remains slow to catch on.
