For months Holmes has been in the grip of the dreadful frustration of enforced inactivity. But, with the entrance of Mary Morstan, begins the adventure which Watson will later record as THE SIGN OF FOUR. The mysterious disappearance of her father years before, and an annual gift from an anonymous benefactor intrigues Holmes enough to become involved in the case.
