LADIES OF LETTERS is a gentle comedy drama about two very different widows who forge a friendship through letters. The series is based on the hugely successful and long-running radio series of the same name. It has been described by the British press as Talking Heads meets Keeping Up Appearances, and critics rave about the quality of the writing as well as the stars' mischievous glances and catty inflections. First shown on ITV3, it was moved to ITV1 based on strong ratings and positive viewer reaction. Maureen Lipman (Agony, The Pianist) plays Irene Spencer and Anne Reid (Life Begins, The Mother) portrays Vera Small. The two ladies first meet at Vera's daughter's wedding and begin a correspondence that, beneath a veneer of civility, hides a constant battle of one-upmanship as they regale each other with stories of blissful holidays, delicious recipes and grateful grandchildren.
