This documentary traces the history of the banjo from its arrival in the United States from Africa in the early 1600s to the 21st century, and explores the roots of American music -- the minstrel show, ragtime and early jazz, blues, old-time, folk, bluegrass and country. It includes performances and commentary from contemporary folk musicians such as Pete Seeger, Earl Scruggs, Bela Fleck and the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Actor, comedian, writer and musician Steve Martin narrates the film.
