Judith Traherne (Bette Davis) is a Long Island heiress with a passion for horses. She also enjoys fast cars and a great deal of partying. Judith starts experiencing severe headaches, dizziness and double vision. The socialite ignores the symptoms, until they cause her to fall while riding and later cause a tumble down a flight of stairs.
Judith’s secretary and best friend Beth King (Geraldine Fitzgerald) convinces her to see a doctor. Dr. Frederick Steele (George Brent), a brilliant young brain surgeon, agrees to see Judith. His tests indicate Judith has a brain tumor. Steele decides to operate. During surgery, he discovers the tumor is malignant and he is unable to completely remove it.
Steele wants Judith's condition kept secret, but Judith accidentally comes across the diagnosis. When she finds out she only has months to live, the young socialite discovers a deep inner strength to help her through her final days.
