Mount Graham Red Squirrel

With fewer than 300 of its kind remaining, the Mount Graham red squirrel is one of the rarest animals in all of North America.

The PinaleƱo Mountains in southern Arizona are home to one of the rarest animals in all of North America. Scientists say there are fewer than 300 Mount Graham red squirrels in that isolated, elevated oasis where they depend on a thick canopy of evergreen trees and their pine cones for survival.
